City of Alexandria
In Alexandria, we have a unique opportunity to advocate for truly proportional representation because all 6 at-large members of City Council are elected at the same time.
Proportional ranked-choice voting (PRCV) ensures that City Council reflects Alexandria’s full spectrum of voices, not just those of a plurality.
In multi-seat elections, this system allocates seats in proportion to the collective support candidates receive, meaning that if a group garners 40% of the vote, they should expect to win roughly 40% of the seats.
“When I despair about the ineffectiveness of Congress, the zero sum game both sides insist on playing, to no one's actual advantage, I remember that RCV might actually make a difference.
The art of compromise is in hiding; somehow we need to bring it back.”
Congressman Don Beyer, (D-VA)
What does this mean for Alexandria?
Nearly every voter impacts the outcome. PRCV ensures that the vast majority of voters have one of their top-ranked choices elected.
Balanced representation across the political spectrum. Whether urban or suburban voices, progressive or moderate perspectives, PRCV helps ensure all receive fair representation.
More trust in local government. When more votes translate into representation, electoral legitimacy improves and voter confidence grows.
By adopting a proportional ranked choice model, Alexandria can uplift underrepresented communities, ensure competitive elections, and build a more inclusive, representative City Council.
